Was watching this indie flick, "Mutual Appreciation", this weekend. The movie was shot in black & white which in a sense makes you focus more on the dialogue being spoken in the film than the surroundings. The story line goes as this: an aspiring rocker, Alan, heads to New York after college and meets up with this old buddy, Lawrence, who from I could gather from the very little that is mentioned about his line of work, a graduate assistant at some school in NYC. Lawrence has a girlfriend, Ellie, a vegetarian might I add, and the couple is very much into each other.
However, with Alan coming into the picture, Ellie goes off into slight tangent with her commitment to the relationship and starts to like Alan for all his Dylanesque character, he even looks like the great man himself to a certain extent. The two strike a mutual appreciation for each other and it was really sweet to see how this developed throughout the course of the film. What I loved even more is how despite their natural attraction towards each other, both know what the moral high ground is and what is the right thing to do: friendship is more important than diving into some thoughtless lustful moment that would have a longevity in milliseconds of life years and regretful consequence that would perhaps bleed into eternity. What was even more cool is that, honesty really does pay off in the end as Ellie saw this appropriate to express Lawrence about her deviation and exposing the natural fallibility of human morality while the iron was still hot.
I swear, the character of Alan, seems like it has been taken off a page of my life experience with a very close friend of mine who is a musician as well. Playing the appearance of a carefully careless (or could very well be simply careless) getup, messed up hairdo and a preppy boy garb. The music played in the film resembles a lot to the venerable White Stripes. It's incredible how one can churn out beautiful music with just a set of drums and a guitar. Highly recommend to check this flick out if you expect to get some thought provoking moments while you take a journey through it.
